The Ambassador

H. E. Ovidiu Dranga, Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Poland

Mr. Dranga started his mission as Ambassador of Romania to Poland on the 19th of June 2013. Prior to this, he held the position of Spokesperson and State Secretary for relations with the Parliament and public diplomacy, as well as State Secretary for Global Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - MFA (2012-2013). Between 2008 and 2012, he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Kingdom of Belgium. From 2001 to 2003 Mr. Dranga held the position of Deputy State Secretary for Defense Policy and Euro-Atlantic integration within the Ministry of National Defense -MoD, before being appointed as Political Director in the MFA (2005-2007).

Ovidiu Dranga, who joined the MFA in 1991, is a career diplomat, with the diplomatic rank of Minister Plenipotentiary. In the exercise of specific competences within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, Mr. Dranga has contributed to key projects, relevant for Romania’s foreign and security policy, like Romania’s preparation for NATO membership (1994-2004), “The Black Sea Forum for Dialogue and Partnership” (2006), “Black Sea Sinergy” (2007), “Post-conflict Reconstruction and Stabilization Course” (2008), "Bucharest Format – B9” (2015-2019) etc.

He holds a BA in engineering from the Polytechnics University of Bucharest (1985-1990) and a Master in Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University - JFK School of Government (2003-2004).

He attended post-graduate courses at the “Naval Postgraduate School (NPS)” - Monterey (CA), USA (2001), "George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies", Germany (1994), Romanian Institute of International Studies - IRSI (1992-1993) and "Istituto di Studi e Ricerche Internazionali", Italy (1992). Mr. Dranga has worked as Associate Lecturer at the “National School for Public Administration-SNSPA” (2001-2005), and has lectured at the Diplomatic Academy and the Romanian Diplomatic Institute (IDR) (2012-2013), in Bucharest.

In addition to articles and interviews published in various journals including „Lumea” (1990-1991), „Dilema Veche” (2005), “DC News” (2014), “European Times” (2016), “Financial Times” (2012 and 2018), “Polskie Radio” (2018 and 2019), “Poland IN TVP” (2019), “AGERPRES” (2018), “Ziarul Financiar” (2017 and 2018) and “Foreign Policy Romania” (2015), he contributed several papers on security and defense to publications such as "EU military beyond 2020" - contribution to "European Interests, a Vision for 2020", Thomas Pollan and Guido Houben (Eds.) - 2004, Nomos ed., and "Regional and Bilateral Defense Cooperation", a contribution to "Romania: Defense Reform and NATO Integration", edited by Larry Watts, under the aegis of the Center for Romanian Studies Iasi, Oxford, Palm Beach, Portland (2002).

He is fluent in English, Italian and French.
